Overview of Instruction
All instruction is delivered through an individualized, one-to-one approach designed to address the unique needs of each child. Every child has an individual learning plan based on an initial Academic Assessment. Each individual plan is dynamic, with adjustments made as often as necessary to continue to promote a student’s progress and success.
Instruction at FWCL is intensive, systematic, and explicit. Programs are well-respected, brain-based, scientifically proven and success oriented. Our priority is to create an environment where children are building the academic skills, the learning habits, and the self-confidence necessary not only to survive, but to thrive in school and life.
A child’s progress and success is greatly enhanced by the encouragement and involvement of parents/guardians and teachers. The FWCL schedules face-to-face progress updates with parents and regularly communicates with teachers regarding newly discovered academic skills and learning strategies.
FWCL provides effective and high intensity one-to-one instruction in the areas of reading, spelling, writing, math, comprehension, and academic independence management. The programs implemented at the center are scientifically proven, brain-based, and success oriented. While students work to enhance and build academic skills, instruction is also taking place to help a student discover how to think about learning and how to regulate habitual and anxiety-ridden learning behaviors. At FWCL, we understand that, for true and lasting success, a child must develop academic skills and also develop the confidence and positive self-image to continue the learning process.

Our instructors are experts in delivering the above programs. They are also trained to help students consciously learn to learn. Together with the instructor, the student discovers strategies that will help them learn regardless of the subject matter or environment. This allows the student to become more independent, have the ability to self-correct, be creative, and learn to problem-solve in areas where thinking and performance have been difficult. When a student discovers mistakes are simply another opportunity to learn, they build confidence and the ability to take more academic risks.
In order to build a student’s academic skills and self-confidence, FWCL practices Lindamood-Bell™ Respond-to-the-Response Strategies, Socratic teaching strategies, verbal mediation strategies, self-coaching strategies, and diagnostic teaching strategies. This type of instruction is focused on facilitating a student’s ability to discover what he needs to know, to be able to break down and organize information and to develop his self-monitoring, self-control and self-adjusting skills when doing a task. The focus is not on just providing students with information but on facilitating and supporting them through the process of discovering, connecting, storing, retrieving and applying information. FWCL delivers long term, consistent, individualized, and high intensity instruction that is explicit, progressive and systematic at all levels. Our programs help students develop skills in tasks and activities at concrete and conceptual levels, in learning behavior management; and in academic independence management.
